Happy Valentine’s Day! Taking a little break from Alzheimer’s today to talk about love!
February 14th, also known as Valentine’s Day, is a day dedicated to expressing love toward significant others, friends, and family. While often associated with romantic love, it can be an opportunity to just celebrate love in any form. And since we know that life is short, you should always tell those close to you that you love them.
The history of Valentine’s Day dates back to ancient Rome, where the festival of Lupercalla was celebrated in mid-February. This pagan festival was later replaced by St. Valentines Day, named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine. Over time, the day evolved into a celebration of romance and love, influenced by the poets of the Middle Ages.
Common traditions include:
Exchanging cards and letters: Rather it’s a store bought elaborate card or my favorite a creative homemade card, this is a time honored tradition.
Giving gifts: Flowers, chocolates and jewelry are the most popular gifts to symbolize love and appreciation
Romantic Dinners: This one is my favorite, rather it’s a cozy homemade dinner or a fancy night out, a good meal is always enjoyable
Handwritten love letters: In this day of digital communication, a handwritten letter can be extra special
Adventure dates: Plan an activity that you can both enjoy, such as hiking or cooking something new together, or checking out a local museum or hot spot.
Self-love: Don’t forget to treat yourself. We get busy with life and taking care of everyone else(especially us mamas) take a break, get your nails done, take part in your favorite hobby or simply go for a walk, something that is just for you. Self-love is important.
On a side note, today would also have been my daddy’s 81st birthday and without him, the book, the website, the blog wouldn’t be a thing. So, thank you daddy for all the love, encouragement and support. And Mike might not have been a big romantic gesture kind of guy, but he loved big and was quick to tell you. I never wondered if I was loved.
Remember Valentines Day is not just for couples. It’s a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for friends, family and neighbors. Small gestures can make a big impact. It is a reminder that love is worth celebrating. Whether you’re planning a grand romantic gesture or simply sharing a kind word with a friend, the point of the day is in the connections we cherish. So here’s to spreading love every day.
