Did anyone else’s dad have odd little sayings or advice that became part of your everyday normal ? For instance, these are some of my dads-
Return borrowed items in the same condition they were in when you got it
Gas gauges should never go below ¼ a tank
When playing a game with a child it’s ok to let them win sometimes but remember losing can be an important lesson
Always do your best, even if you fail at least you left it all on the table
I catch myself repeating them more often than I want to admit. He was full of little tidbits of advice and weird trivia. He was wise, loyal, kind, godly, but mostly he was my biggest fan and although he was quiet he had a wicked sense of humor. He has been gone almost 10 years and I think of him nearly everyday and hope I have made him proud. We used to meet for breakfast every Wednesday after my mom passed away and it was in these moments that I felt like I knew him as a person and not just daddy. I truly feel blessed to have had Mike Simmons for a dad, he was one of a kind.
I have also had the good fortune to be married to a pretty great dad. 27 years ago we set out on this journey called parenthood. As a young married wife and mother, I couldn’t possibly have imagined the things we would have to traverse. Through all the ups and downs, laughter and tears Paul handled it all like he was a pro. He was the calm in every storm and the voice of reason when I was sure everything was falling apart. Jordan and Michael have no idea just how lucky they are. To top it off I am getting to watch my youngest step into the role of father. I know he will do great – he had two of the best examples to follow.
I am also aware that some of you didn’t have a great dad or maybe never knew who he was at all. But know that you have a Heavenly Father who loves you and wants to know you. And for those of you who are lucky enough to spend time with your dad this weekend, take a minute and give him a high five or even a hug. It’s too easy to take people for granted, it just takes a second to pick up the phone or put a card in the mail.
