Can Pumping Iron Pump the Breaks on Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer's is on the rise so finding little ways to prevent this disease isn't easy. Weightlifting might just be the answer we have been searching for.

I tell people all the time that if I read an article that said studies have shown standing on your head while scratching your rear could cure Alzheimer’s then you would most definitely find me doing just that every day. Of course that is ridiculous. But what if I told you that new studies(yes more than one) have shown that lifting weights can actually lessen cognitive decline. We have always known that regular exercise is good for overall health, especially cardiovascular health and diabetes.  This study doesn’t just show that it slows down the decline but over time and with consistency it could possibly reverse damage.

Weightlifting activates the central nervous system which helps protect against age related cognitive decline, possibly even lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s. Resistance training can improve memory, enhance executive function such as focus, planning and task-switching, as well as reducing overall inflammation leading to increased mental clarity. Weightlifting actually encourages the formation of new neural connections. This is good news and something to get excited about.

Now, for those who don’t know me, I am a cardio junkie. I would rather walk, run or even dance.  I dislike weights.  But this is a no brainer and quite possibly a game changer.  This is an easy addition to our daily routines, and I for one will be adding in at least two days of moderate to heavy lifting…. it can’t hurt right? This doesn’t mean jump in with 1000 pound dead lifts and body builder style workouts. Keep it simple. Using 10# dumbbells or even resistance bands will do the trick, at least to start. It also doesn’t need to take your whole day, just 30-45 minutes two to three times a week is enough. You’ll be building  muscle and building  brain health at the same time! I might still have some chance of developing Alzheimer’s but at least I will be buff! I think this idea is worth a shot!

Current Alzheimer’s Research: A Ray of Hope

Millions of people are suffering from Alzheimer’s and that doesn’t include the caregivers. But today I am optimistic, I believe there is hope. At least for a treatment if not a cure. My hope is that by the time my children are in their 60’s Alzheimer’s will be no more.
